Love language? Got a yen for snappy phrases? Do we have an event for you.

Union-Tribune language columnist Richard Lederer and musical comedian Bill Shipper team up to deliver a double dose of wordplay in music and song called Dances with Words on Wednesday, July 23, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the San Carlos Library.

The two verbaholic punsters present memorable musicality, rhythmic rhymes, tons of tonality, and heaps of hilarity, celebrating the crazy world of the English language with topics such as musical idioms, wordplay, and limericks.

Our annual Summer Reading Program started on June 1 and ends on Aug. 31.

The theme for this year is “Level Up at Your Library.” Children and adults are encouraged to read 10 books or for 10 hours to complete the challenge. Prizes include museum passes, food coupons and more. We will be hosting special shows for the children including science, puppets, animals, and music on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.

Additional program details, including a list of the prizes, can be found here.

The Junior Innovators STEM Club is a new program for elementary and middle school students that will be held on the third Tuesday of each month starting on July 15 at 4 p.m.

Children will work hands-on on a variety of science and math activities. Join us for fun and engaging STEM presentations and projects hosted by the Patrick Henry High School Junior Innovators Club.

Blaine Davies, professor of U.S. History, will present the San Diego Oasis program U.S. Historical Novels on Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m.

He will define what a U.S. historical novel is and explain how they help us better experience the dramatic events that shaped our nation. He will discuss a wide range of novels dealing with almost every aspect of U.S. History and how a well-written novel makes history come alive.

Artists, Luz Shepard and Elsa Orozco-Toops, will be displaying their work in the Winer Family Community Room through to Aug. 30.

Shepard has enjoyed learning a variety of art styles throughout her life, but over the past thirty years, she has focused on pastels and Sumi-e art inspired by the beautiful nature of San Diego.

Orozco-Toops also works in a variety of styles including oil, water, acrylic, and ink with her inspiration coming from her passion for life, nature, and the study of humanity.

Come meet them at their artist reception on Saturday, July 19, at noon.

Finally, the San Carlos Friends of the Library Used Book Sale is held on the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We are in need of your gently used book donations, which are accepted any time during library open hours.

Come buy books and support the Friends of the Library. Ask for a membership envelope from the book sale cashiers to join or donate.
