Coronado Playhouse’s New Season Mixes Fantasy, Revenge, Including Musical ‘Sweeney Todd’

The Coronado Playhouse has announced its 79th season, featuring a free classic production, musicals and new plays and special events.
The playhouse also will continue last season’s addition of Saturday matinees, while simplifying pricing – all performances will cost $27.
“The Saturday matinees have been successful for the playhouse,” said Barron Henzel, former board president. “They have given our patrons more choices, as our Sunday matinees almost always sell out.”
The season opens Jan. 12. Shows take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The 2024 slate:
- All Bark, No Bite – Jan 12-Feb.4, a romantic comedy featuring two wildly different couples and one opinionated singleton.
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream – March 8-30, part of the free Classic Series, continuing for the 28th year, featuring Shakespeare’s romantic forest fantasia.
- Tuck Everlasting – April 26-May 19, a musical based on the children’s classic about a girl who discovers a remarkable secret about a special family.
- Nine, the Musical – June 21-July 4, a revival of the Tony-winning musical about a film director who suffers a midlife crisis and the romantic difficulties that ensue.
- Exit, Pursued by a Bear – Aug. 16-Sept. 8, a dark, comedic study of a woman’s desire to take revenge on her abusive husband.
- Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Oct. 11-Nov. 3, a revival of the Stephen Sondheim chiller, a Tony-winner about a man seeking revenge (and meat pies are part of the deal).
Subscriptions are available Sept. 1, while single ticket sales begin Oct. 1.
