Correction: The renovation project for the Fleet Science Center, which begins next month, will cost $5.6 million, a portion of the museum’s $14.6 million capital campaign.

The Fleet Science Center is embarking on a transformation of its historic Balboa Park building, breaking ground in September with completion expected in spring 2026.

Throughout construction, the Fleet will remain open, continuing to offer exhibitions, IMAX films, and public programs.

The renovation is expected to cost $5.6 million, part of the overall $14.6 million “Science Starts Here” capital campaign.

The renovation will increase public access exhibit space by 20% within the existing footprint and reconfigure the interior to improve flow, create flexible program areas and expand opportunities for hands-on exploration.

Key updates include restoring the building’s entrance to its original location, expanding the Craveology Café, adding a dedicated queuing and concessions area for the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and transforming the current rotunda into a multi-use gallery.

A new free-to-the-public entrance gallery and a reconfigured lower-level gallery will further extend the Fleet’s community reach, according to a news release.

This project follows the first phase of the campaign—the modernization of the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater.

In November 2023, the Fleet replaced its 70mm film projection system, the world’s first and longest-running IMAX projector, with the IMAX Next Generation with Laser system.

Upgrades also included a new sound system, planetarium software, seating and enhanced accessibility. The investment expanded programming to include documentaries, Hollywood films, live performances and immersive planetarium shows.

Renovation updates will be available on the Fleet’s website and social media channels, including behind-the-scenes content and opportunities for community engagement.
