Let the Blooms Begin: Flower Fields in Carlsbad Ready to Burst into Full Color

It’s March in San Diego County and it’s time to think again about seemingly endless field of flowers. And we have just the place for you.

The 55 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that make up the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are in bloom for approximately six to eight weeks each year, from early March through early May.

This burst of color, a local mainstay, also is one of the surest signs of spring in Southern California.

What’s the current status of the blooms? “The northern 14 acres are in bloom and there are another 14 right on (their) heels,” the Flower Fields reported on their website.

The Flower Fields are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission costs $23, with discounts available for seniors, military and children. Tickets must be purchased online ahead of time.

Among the activities coming up for the season are PICNICS + FLOWERS, an experience set against the backdrop of the Flower Fields.

Pop Up Picnic Co. is behind the event, offered every weekend from March 23 to May 12, with seatings available between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The picnic will feature more shade structures, increased semi-private spaces, reserved parking, a private entrance, complimentary wagon rides, an expanded menu, live music and a family-fun zone featuring interactive games.

“We are excited to bring back PICNICS + FLOWERS for its second year with several exciting additions to take this already idyllic setting to the next level,” said Lauren Kimmons, owner of Pop Up Picnic Co.

The culinary offerings include a tasting menu with a variety of options to choose from, including cucumber chive sandwiches, chickpea smash sandwiches, ham and tomato sandwiches, three seasonal side salads, mini charcuterie and fruit pies on a stick for dessert.

Beverages include hibiscus-lemon aguas frescas and mint-infused water. Youngsters will be served a child-friendly meal with cheese sandwiches, fruit and dessert. PICNICS + FLOWERS tickets cost $140 per person; there’s a 50% discount for kids with each adult ticket.
