San Diego Weekend Guide: Aug. 2-4 – Strolling & Sunsets


You favor art, music and theater? Then this is the San Diego weekend for you, especially for works both local and from south of the border.
Tiki Oasis, touted as the world’s largest and longest running Tiki festival, continues through Sunday at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley. The focus will be on Polynesian culture, including art, concerts, a marketplace with 150 vendors, luau and burlesque. Admission starts at $180 for packages or $45 for single-day admission.
Bazaar del Mundo hosts the Latin American Festival beginning Friday, with artists showcasing authentic folk art. The three-day event includes the Mata Ortiz Pottery Market, featuring an ancient style of pottery renowned for the intricacy of its hand-painted geometric and ancestral symbols. Artists whose work will be included are Pedro and Diego Montaño and Jacobo and Maria Angeles, specialists in Oaxacan weaving and wood carving, and Silvia Berrios, a painter from El Salvador.
My Yard Live Beer Company in San Marcos offers up a free weekend-long celebration of its fifth anniversary. The theme, “Boat Shoes & Boots” opens Friday with a dueling piano night, followed by Saturday’s nod to yacht rock and Sunday’s hats off to country. Head to My Yard Live, 288 Rancheros Drive, for live music, miniature golf, cornhole and line dancing. Shows start at 5:45 p.m. Friday while doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Summer is poppin’ at the Old Globe. where it’s opening weekend for the modern – and gender-swapped – Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B, in which Sherlock – Shirley for short – and her new roommate Joan Watson find trouble, all perpetrated by one very suspect supervillain. The mystery joins a slate that includes joins Dual Reality, an acrobatic take on Romeo and Juliet – it closes Sunday – and the featured Shakespeare for the summer, the two-part Henry 6. One more treat: at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the theater presents “Thinking Shakespeare Live!” with artistic director Barry Edelstein and three actors.
ArtWalk @ Liberty Station, a free showcase for more than 175 artists from across the U.S. and the border, returns to Ingram Plaza at Liberty Station on Saturday and Sunday. There will be food, wine, beer and live entertainment with paintings, photography, glass and ceramic art, jewelry and sculpture on display. Some of Arts District Liberty Station’s own artists will appear, including Renee Addison Art, F1VEart Studio & Gallery, Carlton Arts and the Art of MVP. Enjoy interactive activities too, including the KidsWalk area for youngsters. Gates opens at 10 a.m.
The Endless Sunsets Festival begins at Waterfront Park at 3 p.m. Saturday with locals Thee Sacred Souls – they have a new album dropping in October – headlining, joined by Trampled By Turtles, the Dip and Creature Canyon. Tickets start at $78.
Latin Grammy nominee Jorge Aragão appears at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Soap Factory in Logan Heights. General admission to see the Brazilian samba master starts at $81, with discounts for bundled tickets.
