San Diego Weekend Guide: Feb. 16-18 – Premieres & Pageants

Yes, more rain is coming. So make the most of this San Diego weekend. Bundle up too, because there’s a lot of outdoor goodness to be had.
Miss last weekend’s Year of the Dragon festivities? Here’s another chance, through another cultural lens. The 19th annual San Diego Tết Festival takes place at Mira Mesa Park through Sunday, with lion dances, a cultural village, the Miss Vietnam Pageant and food, music and vendors. Headliners Justin Nguyễn and Trina Bảo Trân appear Saturday, with Philip Huy and Mỹ Huyền performing Sunday. Admission is free.
The Old Globe hosts the opening weekend of The Age of Innocence, based on Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic. The world premiere, directed by Karen Zacarías, depicts a clash between high society and love in 1870s New York City. The show continues through March 10. Tickets start at $35. There are five performances this weekend, along with Saturday-Sunday matinees.
Since Valentine’s Day fell smack in the middle of the week, clearly one can celebrate both the weekend before and after.
For families, there’s the City Heights Festival of Love, at 11 a.m. Saturday. The celebration, with a fun zone and live entertainment, provides “a space where diverse perspectives, cultures and values are accepted, appreciated and celebrated.” Before the free fest, at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, walk in the parade, starting off from Joyner Elementary School at 9:45 a.m.
For adults, there’s the Lovers Ball Food & Music Festival, at the Soap Factory in Memorial. Listen to music from Sasha Marie and Winyl Club, visit the arcade lounge and dance at the silent disco. The fest is billed as “San Diego’s first night market celebrating international vegan flavors, music and culture.” Tickets start at $22. Doors open at 3 p.m. Saturday.
This weekend marks the last chance to complete the Coast and Ranch Book Crawl, with visitors invited to touch base at North County book stops for a chance to score specials and win prizes. Participants include the Rancho Santa Fe Book Cellar, Cardiff Book Nook, Title Wave in Solana Beach and the Friends of the Encinitas Library Book Store. The crawl ends Saturday.
For a fair with pop ups from local vendors, an art walk, yoga and live entertainment, head to Encanto at noon Sunday for the Black History Month edition of Daygo Eatz. Start at Marie Wideman Memorial Park, then head to Second Chance, 6145 Imperial Ave., and the Mental Bar coffee house, 6325 Imperial Ave.
Finish up the weekend at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Vibraza Block Party in National City with DJs, a taco stand and on-site bar, and custom merch. Start out at Highland Ave Supply Co., 2440 Highland Ave. Tickets are $10 and up.
