Upcoming Emerging Composers Concert Shines Spotlight on 5 Young Artists


An annual event highlighting young, talented composers from the region will feature multiple world premieres.
The works, commissioned by San Diego New Music, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Athenaeum Art Center at Bread & Salt in Logan Heights. Tickets cost $15.
The composers are undergraduate students who attend school in San Diego, or who graduated from a local high school and attend college elsewhere. They were selected through the 2023 Emerging Composers Commission Competition.
They are:
- Joseph Ceballos, University of San Diego
- Gabriel de Guzman, San Diego State University
- Alex Laubach, Palomar College
- Mai Pacumio, San Diego State University
- Gerry Reoyo, San Diego State University
The music will be performed by Rachel Allen, on trumpet, Anahita Pestonjamasp, on flute, Varun Rangaswamy, on bassoon and Eric Starr, on trombone.
San Diego New Music is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public performance of notated music from the 20th and 21st centuries. The organization offers an annual concert series and the soundON Festival of Modern Music, and also fosters its resident performing ensemble, NOISE.
